Overview

The OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Law offers learners the opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of core legal principles while acquiring essential professional and research skills.

Learners will study both Level 4 and Level 5 units, earning 120 credits per academic year, for a total of 240 credits throughout their studies. This qualification is equivalent to the first two years of a UK Bachelor’s degree with Honours.

The programme equips learners with the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career in law, supporting preparation for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination.

Entry Requirements OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Law

This qualification is designed for learners aged 18 and above.

The typical entry profile includes one of the following:

  • A relevant Level 3 or Level 4 Diploma
  • GCE Advanced Level qualifications in 2 subjects or equivalent qualifications
  • Mature learners (21+ years) with relevant experience (eligibility must be confirmed with the delivery centre before registration)

English Language Requirements

Centres should assess prior qualifications and experience to ensure learners have the necessary foundation for successful study at Level 5.

OTHM Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications are equivalent to:

  • Higher National Diplomas (HND)
  • Year 1 and Year 2 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree programme

Qualification Structure OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Law

The OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Law comprises 12 mandatory units, totalling:

  • 240 credits
  • 2400 Total Qualification Time (TQT)
  • A minimum of 960 Guided Learning Hours (GLH)

To achieve the qualification, learners must complete:

  • 120 credits at Level 4 (6 units)
  • 120 credits at Level 5 (6 units)

Assessment and Verification

All units are internally assessed by the delivery centre and externally verified by OTHM.

The qualifications are criterion-referenced, meaning learners must meet all specified learning outcomes and assessment criteria to achieve a ‘pass’.

To demonstrate achievement, learners must submit evidence that fulfills the learning outcomes and standards. Assessors evaluate performance and provide an audit trail detailing how their judgments were made.

Specific assessment guidance and marking criteria for each unit are available through the Assignment Brief document, which is provided to centres upon request.

Successful completion of the OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Law opens pathways for further academic and professional advancement, including:
